How to convert MOV to MP4 on Mac

Before you start: system, permissions, and output folder

This guide uses the direct-download version of DropShift for Apple Silicon (M-series) Macs running macOS 14 or later. Download your source files to your Mac and leave enough disk space for a separate output file.

Drag files into the DropShift window and choose an action; this does not require Accessibility permission. To open the format wheel while dragging in Finder, enable Quick Drag in Settings and grant Accessibility permission, then hold Shift during the drag. Hold Shift + Option during the drag to switch to editing tools.

Results are saved beside the source by default, or in the output folder you choose in Settings. New files do not overwrite originals; an available filename is used when a name already exists. If the source folder is not writable, choose a writable output folder when prompted.

Convert a MOV with DropShift

1. Check the original MOV

   Play the source file and check its picture, sound, and duration. Fully download files stored in iCloud or another cloud drive first. Changing formats may not repair a damaged source.

2. Drop the file and choose MP4

   Drag one or more MOV files into the DropShift window and choose MP4 from the available actions. With Quick Drag enabled, you can also drag a MOV in Finder, hold Shift, move to MP4, and release the mouse.

3. Wait for the new file

   When conversion finishes, find the .mp4 in the source folder or your configured output folder. The original MOV remains. If an MP4 with that name exists, DropShift uses a new available filename.

4. Test it where you plan to use it

   Play the beginning, middle, and end. Check audio sync, aspect ratio, color, and duration, then import it into the intended website or app. For HDR, wide-gamut, or professional footage, test a representative file before converting a batch.

MOV and MP4 differ in more than their extensions

MOV and MP4 are containers; the video and audio codecs inside them also determine whether a file will play. DropShift exports MP4 using H.264 video and AAC audio. This combination suits common sharing workflows, but the receiving platform's requirements still apply.

Re-encoding can change image quality and file size. A MOV already compressed with an efficient codec may grow when converted to H.264 MP4. If reducing size is the main goal, use the compression action and compare the output.

The current MP4 conversion selects the first video stream and first audio stream. It does not preserve every audio track, subtitle, or piece of professional metadata. Keep the original MOV and use an appropriate workflow if you need those elements or a bit-exact archive.

What to check if conversion fails or the result looks wrong

• No sound in the MP4: confirm that the MOV has an audio track and plays correctly. Conversion cannot create sound for a silent source. For multiple audio tracks, check whether the first track contains the sound you need.
• The output is larger: this does not necessarily mean conversion failed. Codec, source bitrate, and scene complexity affect size. Format conversion is not the same as compression.
• The destination app still rejects it: confirm support for H.264/AAC MP4 and check its file-size, resolution, and duration limits. A matching extension does not satisfy every import requirement.
• Cannot read or save the file: check that the source is local and opens correctly, disk space is available, and the output folder is writable. Keep the exact error message if you need support.
