How to extract MP3 or M4A audio from video on Mac
To listen to a screen recording or move a video's sound into an audio app, convert the video directly to MP3 or M4A. DropShift reads the file locally and exports audio while keeping the original video. This extraction re-encodes the sound; it is not a lossless copy of the original audio stream.
Before you start: system, permissions, and output folder
This guide uses the direct-download version of DropShift for Apple Silicon (M-series) Macs running macOS 14 or later. Download your source files to your Mac and leave enough disk space for a separate output file.
Drag files into the DropShift window and choose an action; this does not require Accessibility permission. To open the format wheel while dragging in Finder, enable Quick Drag in Settings and grant Accessibility permission, then hold Shift during the drag. Hold Shift + Option during the drag to switch to editing tools.
Results are saved beside the source by default, or in the output folder you choose in Settings. New files do not overwrite originals; an available filename is used when a name already exists. If the source folder is not writable, choose a writable output folder when prompted.
Export audio from a video
Check that the video contains the sound you need
Play the source to confirm the sound is actually recorded in the file, rather than merely having played on the computer during capture. A converter cannot recover sound that was never recorded into an audio track.
Choose MP3 or M4A
Drag the video into the DropShift window and choose MP3 or M4A. With Quick Drag enabled, drag the video in Finder, hold Shift, move to MP3 or M4A on the format wheel, and release.
Find and listen to the audio
Find the .mp3 or .m4a in the source folder or configured output directory. Listen to the beginning and end, check duration and level, and confirm it contains the right sound before importing it into the destination audio tool.
Check one result before processing a batch
You can drag multiple files together to convert them to the same format. First test a representative video, especially if it has multiple audio tracks. The current interface does not provide a manual audio-track selector.
MP3 or M4A? Check the destination first

M4A is a container extension and does not automatically mean lossless audio. If you need repeated editing, mixing, or an exact copy of the original track, keep the video and use a tool that exports lossless audio or copies the stream directly.
There is no need to convert MOV to MP4 before extracting audio. If you only need sound, choose MP3 or M4A directly from the original video to avoid an unnecessary intermediate conversion.
Missing tracks, the wrong sound, and format confusion
- A no-audio-track error: inspect the original video. A recording made without audio capture, a muted export, or a silent source cannot gain sound through extraction.
- The output contains the wrong language or accompaniment: the source may have multiple audio tracks. This extraction workflow has no manual track selector; use a tool with track selection when you need a specific stream.
- Need a video with its picture but no sound? Use the mute action. Choosing MP3 or M4A creates a separate audio file rather than a muted video.
- An audio app rejects the output: confirm it accepts MP3 or AAC/M4A rather than only WAV. Renaming .m4a to .wav does not convert the audio.
